PREVENTION
Pilates is your prehab to rehab and motion is the lotion in your body. Pain often occurs when you don’t move effectively in all planes available to you. Why wait until you are in pain? That’s why prevention is our top pillar. Let Pilates do it’s thing to support you through flexibility, strength, mobility and therefore body balance so that you can function better in your daily lives and tackle the load that life throws at you.
Pain
Pilates addresses pain like no other method. It is widely used by medical professionals to rehab patients because it works! Many of the physio exercises you would have received have come from Pilates. It is a fantastic method when you are in pain because it is low impact and low load; it is targeted in its approach to muscular and postural balance; and it supports joint stability and strength and therefore longevity. Remember motion is lotion in your body. Don’t block movement and therefore increase pain.
Posture
Posture not only can adversely affect you in terms of causing injury and pain but it can also affect the way you feel about yourself. The majority of us work at a desk and therefore sit too much. It doesn’t matter how great your desk set up is, we are not built to sit down for long periods of time. Sitting staring at a computer causes overtly hunched shoulders; a head forward position; an increased lower back curve; and tight hips and hamstrings. Not a great combination creating joint compression. Pilates exercises can reverse that compression. After a class, people often say they feel lifted, elongated and lighter. Pilates works on your deep postural stabilising muscles, which work against gravity. That’s why you feel more upright and it’s the best method for posture.
Performance
Whether you are a pro athlete or a weekend warrior, Pilates can support you in your performance by increasing your strength, flexibility and mobility. What this means is that Pilates exercises can decompress the body from the repetitive load it is put under. Helping you to rebalance and relieve tension, which in turn aids your recovery; helps you to react better; lessens pain; protects and stabilises your joints; creates a fluid fascial system lessening the propensity to injury; and ultimately gives you longevity in your chosen sport.
